CtrlPrint Preflight is a new feature providing immediate feedback and actionable guidance within InDesign, especially for ESEF-compatible designs. CtrlPrint Preflight identifies potential problems in your CtrlPrint documents directly within your InDesign workflow. This proactive approach allows you to identify and address issues early, streamlining the design process, reducing time-consuming revisions, and ensuring adherence to our ESEF Best Practices.
This document will cover:
- How to get started?
- CtrlPrint Preflight Settings
- The Preflight panel
- Chapter-Level Preflight Overrides
How to get started?
Company or Project Administrators can activate CtrlPrint Preflight and select the desired preset on the project page. The Preflight Panel in InDesign then flags potential issues and provides helpful guidance, allowing you to efficiently identify and resolve potential document issues.
CtrlPrint Preflight Settings
Click the cogwheel icon to open Settings.
Two presets
Choose the preset that best suits your project needs:

- Substituted/Alternate glyph usage
- Grouped text frames
- Overlapping text frames
- Tables exceeding text frame width
- Private Unicode characters
- Frame order
- Missing links
- Overset text
-
Standard Preset: Recommended for projects not using ESEF Reporting. This preset focuses on common document issues that may impact printing or digital output:
- Missing links
- Overset text
(ESEF Preset Checks displayed in the image)
The Preflight panel
Open the chapter in InDesign. Navigate to the CtrlPrint Menu and select Open Preflight.
- When Preflight is activated on the project page in CtrlPrint and the document is opened for editing in InDesign, the CtrlPrint profile will automatically be set as the default and appear in the Profile dropdown menu.
- Clicking the page number next to the identified error will take you directly to the location of the error in the layout.
- Expand the Info dropdown menu to view more details about the error.
Chapter-Level Preflight Overrides
You can override project-level preflight settings on a chapter-by-chapter basis. This gives you more flexibility to fine-tune your workflow according to the specific needs of each chapter.
How it works
As a Company or Project Administrator:
- Go to a chapter page or open the context menu for a chapter on the project page.
- Click on Chapter Settings and select Preflight.
- In the Preflight Chapter Settings dialog, select which preset you want to use for this chapter.
Please note: Once you override the project-level preset at the chapter level, any changes made to the project-level preset won’t apply to that chapter.
You can easily clear an override and revert back to the project preflight settings at any time by selecting Use Project Settings on the chapter level preflight setting.
