There are three types of validation error:
- Automatic validation errors: a red triangle appears automatically in the top right hand corner of a cell when the tagger automatically detects a validation error. Hover your mouse over the affected cell to see the validation error, or click Validation Status in the bottom left hand corner of the tagger, for more information.
- Document validation errors: these occur when users click Validate Document from the tagger top-menu bar;
- Report generation validation errors: these occur when tagged documents are merged using the Create ESEF Report function in CtrlPrint and the tagger detects a clash between tags between the merged documents.
Below is an explanation of the validation errors you might see while using the tagger and their possible solutions.
Document validation errors | |
---|---|
Duplicate mapping detected |
For each year column, tags can only appear once in the document with the same value and element label (i.e. the text to the left). The error message will indicate the affected tag and cell that is duplicated. Please click the Table Cell Properties tab in the bottom left hand pane and check that:
|
Invalid anchor: Extension element for cell (Cell Name) has no anchors |
Every custom extension to the taxonomy needs at least one anchor to the original XBRL taxonomy, unless it is the total of a calculation relationship. To add an anchor:
If the cell is the total of a calculation relationship, you will need to set up the calculations first, otherwise you will get this error. |
Duplicate label: The element (Tag Name) has multiple labels for role… |
You will receive this validation warning if you have the same tag in two different places where the Label of the Element is different. A common example is Opening and Closing Balances where the labels have year names (e.g. Opening Balance 2019 and Opening Balance 2020). To fix this: You can rename the Label of the Element under Table Cell Properties to be the same for the two cells. In the above Opening Balance example, you should rename both of these to Opening Balance. If you want to use an Excel Mapping Report you will see that the Label of the Element name for both rows will now be Opening Balance. The original Table Row Label can be found in Column AC and will show Opening Balance 2019 and Opening Balance 2020 respectively. You can then change the Preferred Label Role under Table Cell Properties. For opening and closing balances you can use PeriodStart and PeriodEnd respectively. For labels where you use more or less specific phrasing, you can use Standard, Verbose or Short label roles. |
The reported total does not match the calculated total |
Your calculated total is incorrect. Please be aware that calculations are not as important as applying the correct tags with the correct fixed/preparer-set attributes. Please be aware that you cannot have calculations with both Instant and Duration Period types - this is a feature of XBRL. You will need to delete this calculation. To try and fix the calculation, please click the Table Cell Properties tab in the bottom left hand pane and check that:
|
The value '–' is not valid for selected XBRL format '123 456.78 | 123,456.78 (ixt:num-dot-decimal)' (or num-comma-decimal) | Please select the cell with the value '-', click the Table Cell Properties tab in the bottom left hand pane and change the Number or Date Format to fixed-zero. |
The mapping for a duration type element has a StartDate that is later than the EndDate. Please set a correct StartDate. |
Please click the Table Cell Properties tab in the bottom left hand pane and change the Instant/End Date value to be later than the Period Start Date value. |
For at least one calculated element the selected period type or date does not match the total element. |
The date or period type (i.e. instant or duration) of the tag is incorrect. This most commonly occurs when importing tags between languages. Another common cause is that you have created a calculation for an instant tag that use duration tags as summands (or vice versa). Please click the Table Cell Properties tab in the bottom left hand pane and check the Instant/End Date and Period Start Date value. If you have created an extension, please use the Taxonomy Extension Properties tab to change the period type if necessary. |
The selected format is incompatible with tag |
An incorrect base format has been applied, e.g. a date format for a monetary value. Please check that you have used the correct tag.
|
The value is not valid for the format |
The selected format cannot be applied to the value of the tag. Please check that you have used the correct tag.
|
Tagging element missing | A cell in the Changes of Equity table has dimension members tagged, but no line item. |
Dimensionally invalid |
Each column mapping in the Changes of Equity table has to contain the same dimension. We recommend checking all the dates are correct for Instant (i.e. Opening/Closing Balances) and Duration type tags. |
Table (Table Name) has no table element mapped |
Every table containing tags needs to be tagged with a table tag.
|
The table (Table Name) has x cell(s) without a mapping |
A cell in a table (with a table tag) has no mapping. Every cell with a figure in it must have a tag applied to it.
|
The table (Table Name) has x cell(s) not taking part in a calculation relationship |
This is an information level warning, not a critical error. Many cells will not be involved in a calculation relationship. If you need to create a calculation relationship for the affected cells:
|
The table (Table Name) has x cell(s) with the status in edit/review pending |
In order to monitor your progress, cells can be given one of three different statuses. Cells with the In Edit status (highlighted red) or Review Pending (yellow) need to be updated to Final (green) to remove this validation warning.
